Productivity is a reflection of the efficiency with which a business produces output from a given set of inputs. To some, 'productivity' means squeezing more out of an already-overstretched workforce. To the enlightened it means 'looking up' from the day job, taking note of some of the advances in business practices and technology, and actually challenging the way things are done in the business.
Improving productivity means doing more, with less exertion and less resources, in less time. It's not about being either aggressive or defensive, it’s about structuring things, organising things and doing things more intelligently.
It is a culture in which everyone continually strives to make better use of all the available resources - an ongoing process to ensure the effort is effective and efficient. Improved productivity means higher profitability and competitiveness.
I particularly like the definition of the European Productivity Agency (formulated in Rome in 1959):
“Productivity is, above all, a state of mind. It is an attitude that seeks the continuous improvement of what exists. It is a conviction that one can do better today than yesterday, and that tomorrow will be better than today. Furthermore, it requires constant efforts to adapt economic activities to ever-changing conditions, and the application of new theories and new methods.”
